Our Projects
ELF's goal is to lower barriers to education and ensure that every child, no matter what their circumstances, has access to a clean and safe school environment in Phayao. Public school attendance is free, but we have identified potential obstacles to education and developed programs to mitigate their effects:

ELF Club

ELF Club is an after-school program that furthers educational development in Phayao. Our pilot project in Baan Ka and Baan Tom schools will allow us to invest directly in the girls and teach life skills, teach English, help with homework and put on workshops targeted to making them better students and citizens.

Scholarship

Scholarships: Since 1997, ELF has given over 1,000 scholarships to deserving boys and girls in Phayao Province's 62 middle schools who are at risk for falling victim to a life of child labor or being sold into the sex trade. Many of our children come from homes affected by poverty, abandonment and diseases like HIV/AIDS. A child's education, even though provided free by the government, becomes a distant priority for families that are desperate for extra income. Unfortunately, children are too often forced to work in the fields or are even sold in indentured service to work as laborers or sex workers. We try to make sure that education is accessible as possible for children and promoted as the key to their successful futures.
Our scholarships provide children with lunches, books and shoes necessary to make it to school and participate daily. In addition to the supplies, the scholarships provide protection for the children in the form of guardianship. Every child in our program is being monitored by teachers for attendance as well as risk factors that could threaten them or their education.

Clean Water in Phayao Schools: With the help of Rotary Club Japan, ELF has installed water filtration tanks in 63 Phayao-area schools that provide clean drinking, washing and cooking water that is absolutely essential for the health and well-being of each child. The water, if left untreated, carries minor to major bacteria and disease. With clean water from these water filters, every child can stay healthy and stay in school!
